Hailing from the vast expanses of Texas, Ume's music is a relentless expression of dissonance and beauty, cacophony and catharsis. With their debut album Ume capture a power and energy reserved for the most coveted of live acts.
Intentions are declared immediately on the sprawling opener "Wake," a song that moves from Sabbath-like sludge to sublimely beautiful melodic interplay and back within the course of a few minutes. This precedent is maintained for ten songs that put forth the same level of sonic intensity and aggression without relief.
In the middle of it all is the mysterious and charismatic Lauren Langner Larson, whose frenzied guitar playing combines My Bloody Valentine atmospherics with the elated noise of 90's mainstays like Sonic Youth and Nirvana. She sings wonderfully eerie melodies, her vocal delivery fluctuating between threateningly seductive whispers, barely restrained growls and unnerving screams.
Even with the commanding front-woman presence, Ume never sounds anything less than a fully integrated musical force. Eric Larson's bass is in constant play with the guitars, creating a dense melodic palette for Lauren's vocals and occasionally his own. The two are married and it seems obvious, as their playing seamlessly blends and propels the songs. All the while, Jeff Barrera pounds on the drums, shifting tempos and starting and stopping without hesitation.
